My Project

When my students walk through the doors as 6th graders they are unknowingly entering the most impressionable years of their lives. Their emotions become heightened, a social hierarchy develops, and most circumstances can be met with some sort of negotiation. Through all the change though, my students become more engaged in their learning and truly take control of their understanding of the world around them. They take charge and ask many questions along the way.

“Mrs Schuermann, if we can’t see it, how do we know what it actually looks like?”

That's simple, we examine a model.

In order for my students to understand the more complex topics they will learn through their academic career it is important they understand the very, teeny tiny, basic unit of life, a cell. Providing students with a model of an animal and plant cell will help students to draw connections between how all living things, though very different, still have similar functions. The models I have selected will show students examples of each organelle previously discussed and give them the chance to manipulate the organelles throughout the cell. Pictures help students visualize a concept but hands-on learning allows them to become fully captivated and engaged in their learning.
