My Students

My sixth grade students come together from three different intermediate schools to one middle school. For many students it is a time of excitement and greater freedom. I enjoy teaching this age group because it is such a transitional time from elementary to teenage years.

My overarching goal is to foster a love of reading and writing in my students.

I read the latest books in teen literature that may peak my students' interests, and I love when they come to me with recommendations for good books. My school recently adopted the Lucy Caulkins readers and writers workshop model. I think that this teaching method is highly engaging for students, and so I am jumping in with both feet by making my classroom a welcoming place for reading and writing to flourish!

My Project

I have spent a good deal of time and money creating a classroom environment that supports my students' needs and desires for Reading Workshop. Too often middle school classrooms lack the bright colors and "homey" feeling of elementary classes. I want my students to have the flexibility to choose where they can read and work comfortably and productively.

Currently my students choose to read at desks, tables (including a high top table brought in from home), a makeshift bench, lower crate seats created with milk crates, or even on the floor.

Making sure students have that CHOICE is an essential part in motivating them. I have noticed a huge improvement in my students' work habits and reading volume when they are given a choice in their seating.

The carpet and couch that I have selected will help give my students additional seating options, which will better motivate them. These areas will compliment my classroom library and mini-lesson area, where we gather as a class for lessons and where students work in partners and groups. Thank you for your consideration.
