Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic and civically engaged sixth graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, and the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community-oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school-sponsored events including craft night and our student-run multicultural fair.
My students desire to be challenged academically and to grow as critical thinkers.
In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they can all achieve greatness.
My Project
Virtual learning has been a challenge for some of my students, especially when it comes to finding, "good fit" books for independent reading. Through whole-class read alouds I was able to introduce books that brought them enjoyment. Some books were the first in their series, and ended in cliff-hanger moments that brought cries of, "What?! How can it JUST end like that?!" Other titles helped my students discover a new favorite author or genre. My desire is that my students keep this reading momentum going during the summer.
I am requesting high interest books that will engage my students in reading throughout the summer.
By providing my students books by their favorite authors and in their preferred genres they are more likely to read during the summer months. Graphic novels such as the series "My Hero Academia" and "Dogman" are popular amongst my students. Jayson Reynolds is my students' all-around favorite author, and many are looking forward to reading the second book in his "Track" series called, "Patina." A number of students ask thought provoking questions about our country and social issues; Michelle Obama's, "Becoming" and George Takei's, "They Called Us Enemy" are good fit books for those students.
Because of donors like you, my students can continue to build their literacy skills during the summer while simultaneously getting lost in a great book.
