My students need activity centers that will strengthen written and spoken vocabulary.

I enjoy the students in my classroom. So much so that I requested to loop with them from second to third grade. Even though I teach at one of the most challenging neighborhoods in Chicago, my students and their families value education and recognize it as a key for success. I wish you could meet them...these 30 young people are inquisitive, supportive of one another, funny, and they want to learn. They enjoy dancing to music, listening to me read to them as I change the characters' voices, and the original Woody Woodpecker cartoons. Their eagerness and the questions they ask make me a better teacher. This class challenges me in a positive way to find necessary resources to meet their academic needs.
Trying to get my third graders to develop an interest in word work and vocabulary development continues to be a challenge.
Most struggle with writing and sentence development. As such, I am looking for educational tools that are engaging that will encourage language development.
My third graders enjoy using our listening centers during small group reading time. As such, I am hoping to be able to obtain the Building Vocabulary Listening Center. These centers would be ideal when lesson planning. For example, I can envision planning a lesson with a group who is struggling with context clues. I can use direct small group instruction to teach context clues, then have the group use the listening center practice these skills. This center is diverse in that it also teaches prefixes, suffixes, antonyms, and multiple meanings. This center will go a long way in assisting my students.
Obtaining this listening center will help my students develop a strong understanding of written and verbal vocabulary.
It will enhance student learning and I believe that they will find it rigorous, yet engaging. I also believe that this can be the foundation where they integrate reading words to giving these words meaning.
