My students need Chromebooks to complete many of their assignments. Because so many of them are afflicted with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and phonological processing disorders, they use a voice to text technology to express their ideas.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Well, I have the best job in the whole school because I pretty much just work with a bunch of superheroes. They may be missing a cape, a mask, and other superhero type gadgets, but the super hero is in there!

You see, all of my students have learning disabilities, and/or self-monitoring and/or behavior challenges, and/or health impairments that make their lives a lot more difficult from the moment they wake up until the time they close their little superhero eyes at night.

And that makes them superheroes? No. Absolutely not. What makes them superheroes is that in spite of these differences and difficulties they come to school every day and work really hard to do the very things they find most difficult. Most of us choose to do things that we are good at. But these guys, they work through disabilities, frustration, and low self-esteem to slay the dragon and keep up with their peers. In short, they're brains are running extra laps just to go the same distance.

Yet they do it. Every day.

My Project

Chromebooks can help many of my students are affected with dyslexia and phonological processing disorders which makes the writing process laborious, torturous, and frustrating. They are so focused on letter formation or spelling, that they cannot further develop the great ideas they have. Chromebooks can facilitate the process.

By using text to speech technology on the chromebook, they can express themselves with greater easy, focusing more on content and style rather than spelling and letter formation.

My students need access to this technology most of the day, and unfortunately, there are just not enough chromebooks in the school to go around. Having my own set of chromebooks that are designated for Special Education students to use whenever they need will assure that these students can flourish and find success just like their typical peers.
