This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are passionate about learning! They love to come to school and they love to learn new things. Some of my students come from single parent homes, high poverty environments, or homes that speak two or three languages. Some of my students come to me with high behavioral and attention needs or have had no exposure to a school setting.

Since some of my students don't have the best home environment, I try to make our classroom a home away from home.

When we enter our classroom we are a family who tries our best to take care of one another by showing each other love, pushing each other to do better, and catching each other when we fall.

My Project

In order for students to be successful in the classroom, they need to be comfortable and know that they have choices. They need to know they are loved and that they are in a place where they can be themselves! In order to make my students comfortable while learning I would like to change the environment of our classroom.

By adding a cozy, kid-sized, comfy chair to our classroom community, students will be able to enhance their social skills as well as their ability to collaborate with their peers!

Developing social skills is a huge piece of what is missing from today's kindergarten curriculum. With so many things to teach, it is hard to find time to sit down and teach students how to be kind or how to speak to their peers. By introducing a chair to our classroom, I can integrate a natural way to teach students to collaborate with one another and teach basic social skills. When students are ready to choose where to sit to read a book or practice writing their numbers, they will have to work with one another to decide who gets to sit in the chair. If students begin to argue over the chair, I will have the perfect opportunity to help students increase their social skills by teaching them how to speak to one another respectfully and how to become problem-solvers!
