Enhancing Social-Emotional Learning in My ELA Classroom

Help me give my students a variety of racially diverse books and social-emotional learning games as well as educational games on the new laptop to enhance student engagement and a culturally inclusive classroom.

My Project

This project aims to outline the rationale for empowering students' sense of identify by incorporating stories of positive role models and educational games into the 11th-grade English curriculum. Furthermore, the proposal suggests the implementation of improved technology, such as a new class laptop, to facilitate more efficient and interactive learning experiences for in-class and field trip exploration.

Benefits of Diverse Perspectives:

Cultural Competence: Including diverse narratives or perspectives such as using the book, The Light They Carry, fosters cultural competence among students, preparing them for a globalized world by exposing them to a variety of narratives and viewpoints.

Social-Emotional Learning:

Books that teach students about change, loss, and identity are relevant to student experiences and affirming to their social-emotional development:

1. Emotional Intelligence: Integrating SEL games in our ELA class supports the development of emotional intelligence, helping students manage stress, build resilience, and navigate social interactions more effectively.

2. Empathy and Understanding: SEL promotes empathy by encouraging students to understand and appreciate the diversity of experiences, fostering a more compassionate and inclusive classroom environment.

Integration of Technology:

Enhanced Engagement: Incorporating a new class laptop into the learning environment can facilitate interactive educational gaming activities, enhancing student participation and comprehension. This laptop would also be accessible when we’re away on a field trip since it’s not dependent on internet access.
