My students are gifted and talented; they excel academically despite being in one of the most economically-challenged zones in an otherwise affluent district.
I model a growth mindset for these future teachers, doctors, engineers, lawyers, and politicians.
They strive to reach higher levels of success in a school building that is the oldest and most overlooked in our district. These students need an environment that's as responsive and unique as they are; flexible seating is a great start for us!
My Project
Gifted and Talented students LOVE to read all kinds of nonfiction materials and current events. These subscriptions to Time for Kids will enhance the STEM materials in our classroom library and allow my students to read engaging stories that catch their attention and create a springboard for problem-solving opportunities.
Time for Kids inspires students to read current events through authentic journalism targeted to their age range.
TfK is a beautifully-developed eight-page weekly magazine that engages students with national news; students have access to a digital version as well. My K-5 grade students will use these magazine subscriptions to enrich our studies of a multitude of Science themes this year: Life Cycles; Space Exploration; Physical Activity & Healthy Diets; and Evaluating News for Fact and Fiction.
My ability to use authentic journalism in my classroom introduces and reinforces with my students that learning happens via various avenues, not just textbooks. Providing them with these full-color subscriptions opens their inquisitive minds and helps me feed their curiosity in a safe, kid-friendly way.
