Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a 1st grade Dual Language teacher teaching in a Title 1 school in the Mott Haven area of the Bronx. The school primarily serves minority, low-income families, some of whom live in temporary housing and others are recent arrivals into the country. My students are very diverse in terms of their language abilities. Some of my students speak English even though Spanish is the primary language spoken at home, while others are recent arrivals into the United States and only speak Spanish. I have a few students who are dominant English speakers who want to learn Spanish. Although my students have various ability levels in Spanish they are committed and excited about developing their Spanish literacy skills.

The new Language Arts curriculum I will be using does not have a Spanish component.

My class will need the Spanish language text that are recommended in the curriculum in order for them to understand the Spanish skills being taught. With the Spanish recommended text, I would be able to use the books on the day I teach the students in Spanish. By having the Spanish recommended text before the next school year, planning for the lessons will be a lot easier than having to search for text to replace them.
