My Students
Reading comprehension is crucial to learning in every content area. Non-Fiction reading makes up 60% of our students' learning. Exposing them to more authentic non-fiction texts would help them succeed in all areas of school!
My students are so wonderful.
The curiosity and love for learning makes me excited to teach them anyway I can. I am blessed to teach in the same community where my husband works as a firefighter; helping the community in different ways. I would give anything for my students and hope to inspire a love of learning in each and every one of them.
My Project
These Scholastic News magazines offer rich and meaningful images to current events happening in our world today. This grant will give the opportunity for more exposure to authentic non-fiction reading. They will be able to apply skills they learn in the classroom to comprehend these nonfiction readers. In addition, they will be able to learn problems and current events of our society. Many times, they bring the information home and talk to their parents about what they can do as a family about the issues presented in the articles. My students need authentic research materials to help them connect to the news of the world around them.
Not only will it help to enhance their reading comprehension, but these magazines also provide practice with geography skills, such as maps, and graphing skills with charts. These are some of the more difficult skills that 1st graders need to learn in Social Studies and Math.
These magazines help make learning fun and meaningful.
They incorporate all subjects and students can practice skills in real life situations. The magazines provide a teachers guide so that everything is aligned to the state and common core standards. There are also many ideas included to help expand every students' learning potential.
