My students need two inkjet printers and one Compaq Presario desktop computer for research and word processing.

I am an 8th grade English teacher at a public middle school. My students come from predominantly low income families. They are bright, eager, and wonderful students, but unfortunately, my school cannot afford to put working computers in every classroom. Students do not have easy access to the few computers we have in the school. As a teacher of literature, I feel that a computer and printers would allow my students the ability to perform literary research and get more information on authors, genres, and novels we are studying in class. In addition, they can be proud of their writing pieces after they are able to type them up on a word processing program. I would love to expose my students to classic literature that they may not otherwise have a chance to experience, and access to the Internet is a great way to do so. Furthermore, many of my students have no computers, printers, or access to word processing programs like Microsoft Office at home. With computers in the classroom, they could type up and print their essays and creative writing pieces. This will get them familiar with technology for high school and beyond. As a young teacher, these technology resources are something I could keep throughout my career as a teacher in urban schools, and share with needy students for many years to come! As my eighth graders start their final year of middle school and prepare to enter high school, I want to ensure they are strong readers and writers. They deserve the best education possible. I desire to spark in them a love and desire to read. The students will have the literary world at their fingertips with access to the Internet. I will be reading Shakespeare, Hemingway, Orwell, Bronte, Wells, Homer, Wiesel, Dickinson, and many more authors with my class this year. My students will be able to do research in groups and independently with these computers, and become more familiar with and engaged in literacy. There is no better gift to give a child than the gift of literacy. This will allow them to succeed in any task throughout their lives! I would so greatly appreciate your help in preparing these deserving students for the future!
