This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Fifth grade is an amazing year for my students. They are now the leaders and set the example for the rest of the students in the school. This age is one of my favorite age groups to work with. The students are beginning to explore who they are and who they want to be. We come together as a class community in order to have a successful year.
In my class, I instill kindness and respect amongst the school community.
My students are great children who deserve the best possible learning environment. They are hard workers and all range in different abilities. Some of my students have special needs and some of them are gifted. As a teacher for 7 years, I know that students best learn in their own individual ways and as their teacher I want to provide them with as many opportunities as possible.
My Project
Flexible seating is a way to give my students options in how they complete their independent and group work. Some students enjoy laying out on the floor to complete assignments, while others prefer to sit on stools with a clipboard. Giving students options of where to complete their work gives them a sense of ownership. Students feeling a sense of ownership in the classroom is essential to an effective classroom community. Students can choose to sit on the floor with a clipboard, use a lap desk, lay on the floor with a pillow, or sit on a stool. Giving them options makes them want to complete their work.
Students are more engaged when they get to choose where they will work best.
They seem to be less distracted when they make this choice. They want to be successful and know that they made the right choice. Having flexible seating also teaches students problem solving skills. They will have to work it out with their peers if more than one student choose the same spot. Overall, flexible seating will help students gain ownership in the classroom and keep them engaged in their work everyday.
