Flexible seating is a way to give my students options in how they complete their independent and group work. Some students enjoy laying out on the floor to complete assignments, while others prefer to sit on stools with a clipboard. Giving students options of where to complete their work gives them a sense of ownership. Students feeling a sense of ownership in the classroom is essential to an effective classroom community. Students can choose to sit on the floor with a clipboard, use a lap desk, lay on the floor with a pillow, or sit on a stool. Giving them options makes them want to complete their work. Students are more engaged when they get to choose where they will work best. They seem to be less distracted when they make this choice. They want to be successful and know that they made the right choice. Having flexible seating also teaches students problem solving skills. They will have to work it out with their peers if more than one student choose the same spot. Overall, flexible seating will help students gain ownership in the classroom and keep them engaged in their work everyday.
