Help me give my students the materials needed to create projects in our Beginning Work Experience class by allowing them to take pictures, organize materials with tape, trays and labels, and package finished projects with ribbon and boxes.
As an educator in a specialized instruction program, my students are faced with numerous obstacles on a daily basis. The obstacles range anywhere from life skills deficits, social skills, emotional needs, academic delays, and transitional needs. These students come to school each day with the desire to feel special and important. I am looking for creative ways to bring real-life experiences into the classroom, that are age-appropriate, in a simple and meaningful way.
In my classroom, we focus on the student’s ability, not the disability!
My classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads at a first or second-grade level and struggles with everyday life skills. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control all of their obstacles, however, I can certainly control their experiences they get during the school day.
My Project
Students in our Essential Life Skills Program are putting their skills to work in our Beginning Work Experience class. The materials in this project will help these students learn to follow multi-step directions with a "job-like" purpose. My students will complete a hands-on project independently, learn how to set up and clean up a work area, practice their communication skills working in groups, and learn life skills by completing tasks and meeting deadlines.
The donations to this project will empower my students to complete a real-life activity independently with an end purpose.
Trays, tape, and labels will aid my students in organizing all their materials from the beginning stages and throughout the entire process. Students will be taking pictures of places around our campus and then putting copies of these pictures on coasters they are making. They will use the boxes and ribbons to package and deliver their final product. I have seen how hands-on activities have impacted my students in the past, I am hopeful that this will aid in participation and empower them to want to learn to be independent with job-related skills.
