Students in my middle school come from all over the world and at all times of the school year. They also have varying levels of English proficiency. Some are newcomers and have no English when they arrive. One of my goals is to provide new students with resources for practicing English.
My school is a high paced middle school where over 39 languages are spoken.
Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iraq, Syria, Mexico, Egypt, the Ivory Coast and the Dominican Republic are just a sampling of the countries represented. Our school has much to offer these students academically and through the expressive arts. The ELL students are highly motivated and eager to participate in all facets of school life. Some of these students have already encountered many hardships just to get to America. Now they face the challenge of succeeding academically while still acquiring and developing their English language. Simultaneously, these newcomers are also adjusting to their new lives and understanding American culture. What a challenge for these wonderful and hardworking students.
My Project
Having an iPad mini with a set of headphones available to my beginner ELL students will enable them to practice the concepts, reading skills and vocabulary that we are learning in class. Moreover, students can work at their own pace on the iPad mini, using a variety of apps especially suited to English Language Learners. This will enhance their learning and help them to be more confident. Also, there are more students arriving to our school mid-year. An iPad mini with headphones can help these newcomers work independently to catch up on their academic, content and everyday English language vocabulary.
Donations to this project will benefit my ESOL students in a variety of ways.
Students can use the iPad mini to enhance and practice content taught during class. Students who have just recently arrived will have opportunities to use the iPad mini to learn vocabulary previously taught through educational apps. Students are motivated by technology and stay engaged in their language learning. Moreover, ELL students will have opportunities to practice independently and at their own pace.
