I teach 2nd grade in a rural, low social economic status classroom in Illinois. This is my third year teaching and I love every moment! I think that like the microchips found in laptops, neurons in our students' brains are constantly firing off and encoding information. 2nd grade students love making connections between their new learning and past life experiences. As computers do, our students file away information into multiple “folders" to increase fact retention and retrieval.
I want to teach to my students' strengths. I want to expose my students to as much pertinent information and as many learning tools as possible. An HP laptop will enable my students to utilize a technology that they are slightly familiar with, though not entirely comfortable with. My students haven't had any formal exposure to computers at home and in the classroom. They haven't had the opportunity to use a computer-based camera or touch-pad mouse. They haven't been able to record themselves and review their learning in real time.
This particular HP laptop has been chosen to complement our curriculum in various ways. The camera will allow students to record retellings of books read independently. It will allow them to read texts aloud and recheck their reading behaviors for strategies and fluency. The laptop will also be used in conjunction with an LCD projector in order to showcase educational videos.
My students and their families know I believe in them, now you have the opportunity to show them that you believe in them as well. Your donation will make it possible for my students to interact with technology in ways they never have before. You will be able to bridge the gaps as they make connections to the files in their minds. Thank you for taking the time to view this project.
