English Learners Need an Appointment With Dr. Suess!
My students need to develop their English language skills through reading because most of my class are English as second language learners.
My students struggle to learn with their English language development, but the good news is that I have sparked their motivation through literature!
My students have incredible challenges in life.
Most speak a different language at home and live in poverty. I was hoping to brighten their lives, but really they have done that for me. I am forever grateful for them and want to provide the best start I can for them. We are a 94% Spanish speaking school and have 100% in the free lunch program.
I am a first year teacher and have very limited resources. I am bogged down by student loans and cannot provide many supplies on my own. I have noticed that my students' favorite part of the day is teacher read or free read time. We use a lot of dialog about the books they read to stimulate their vocabulary. These books will also help them to strengthen their comprehension and reading skills. If these children learn to read and speak well they will have a much better chance of enjoying school in the long term and may even go to college (that's my goal for them).
Many would say that my students don't have a productive and positive future ahead of them, but I disagree.
I want to do everything in my power to build their self-esteem and help them feel that they can be a positive part of society. With a good foundation they can be the first in their family to go to college. I know this is important because I was the first in my family and now my daughter is on her way. I want them to have the opportunity to start a new family tradition like I did. Thank you!
