Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My K-8 ESL students are a varied range: from fluent English speakers ready to graduate from the ESL program, to newcomers with little to no exposure to the English language. My newcomers are ambitious, dedicated and hardworking, absorbing everything they can. The fluent speakers are empathetic and committed to helping with what they know. They are all loving, caring and compassionate students. Some of them are struggling readers but are working very hard with limited resources they have at home. Being able to see images in COLOR is crucial to their learning and progress. Now that we have, once again moved to fully remote learning, we don’t have the necessary resources to send home materials for each student. Being able to scan our documents in color to add to the lessons will prove imperative to continue a seamless learning experience. The ESL population is growing in our district, while our resources are significantly reduced, but that doesn't stop our kids from learning. They push through and continue to value their education, now more than ever.
My Project
My students, being English Language Learners, are already facing challenges by not being able to communicate with their peers and teachers. Add to that social distancing, where we have to speak through a mask, makes it that much more difficult. In addition, they have to look at the teacher’s colored pages from a distance and black and white images in front of them, while attempting to figure out what’s on the page, how to pronounce it and make connections to prior knowledge, which may or may not exist. All of this we were dealing with as best we could. Now, we’ve moved to remote learning. This gives us the benefit of hearing each other a bit more clearly but not having the images in color in front of them at any given time, is a detriment when learning the language.
The scanner I have selected will give kids the opportunity to see the images in COLOR on their screens and allow me to upload the images to Seesaw, Google Slides, Nearpod, and many other platforms for students to practice their speaking, reading, and writing skills.
It will better aid them in identifying terms, vocabulary, and stories in order to make more meaningful connections. These images, once we are in the classroom, will save me hours of printing. As a traveling teacher, it would allow me to print/scan as much as I need and send packets home for them to practice, while making future ink purchases much more affordable.
In addition, I will be able to use this scanner/printer for all of my World Language Spanish classes which covers all students in grades K-3, who are all also learning a new language.
