Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a high-needs community in a brand new school that has just combined from three distinct schools. We are in a transition year and materials and money are tight. I teach a special class for English Language Learners (English Immersion) in the 4th and 5th grade. Every student in my class is learning English, some have very recently come from other countries. I am responsible for instructing them in the subjects of reading, writing, math, and social studies. They are expected to learn their grade-level material.
Mt students are supposed to be learning the same math and social studies as their peers in regular-education classes. The disconnect is that they don't speak much or any English, and I instruct in English. The way my instruction can be successful is through what is called "comprehensible input." This means communicating messages in multiple ways so that even students who do not understand the language can understand the message.
One excellent way to get a message across to someone who does not speak your language is digital media and the Internet. Imagine you are trying to tell a story to someone who does not know your language, think of how useful access to any picture and millions of videos would be... With an LCD projector I can quickly bring up relevant pictures or video to enhance understanding.
Additionally I have found making PowerPoint presentations with many visuals helps my students understand and organize their thinking, not to mention increases engagement.
I am a young and professional teacher. I am a person that truly believes the potential in each and every one of my students. I am also someone who strongly believes in integrating technology and education. Please help me make this dream a reality in my classroom. Your gift will make a difference in the lives of children every day of this school year and for many to come. Thank You!
