This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There are so many different ways to learn how to read, and one way is through listening to stories. Reading and listening to colorful picture books is one of the best way for English Language Learners to acquire language skills and enjoy reading at the same time!
Our classroom is filled with 25 ready-to-go kindergarten students.
We have nearly perfect attendance every day. There have been many times that when it's time to go home, a tear or two roll off a child's face because they don't want to leave school quite yet. A majority of the students in the classroom are English Language Learners. Our classroom is in an urban area of New York, where the community has little money, parents are working multiple jobs to support their children, and it's a tough neighborhood to play outside.
My Project
We have a Listening Center in the classroom with limited books. This project is requesting to "stock-up" on our audio books for our listening center. We are asking for non-fiction books to support the Common Core standards and the push for reading informational texts. Also in our project, we are asking for Emergent Storybooks which create foundational skills for storytelling and story language. Lastly, to organize these materials, we've requested an audio center to store and use our audio books and really create a "center" area for our listening center!
My classroom received a Listening Center from donors from DonorsChoose and we use it everyday in the classroom!
It is one of the best things that was donated because the students look forward to using the Listening Center! The students talk about which book they want to read that day, and then they talk about the book after they've read it at lunch and with me, the teacher! With these books, we will continue to strive towards language acquisition and attaining the Common Core standards!
