My Project
I'm an English As A New Language (ENL) teacher for 5th to 8th Grades at a public school in Queens, New York. The goal of my project is for my students or English Language Learners (ELLs) to successfully acquire their English Language skills by engaging these books that represent their cultures and inspire them in their new lives as immigrants in New York. These books may be used as contexts for their language practice or for independent reading. Since last year, there has been a first-time significant increase of ELLs at my school therefore, also, an increasing need of more culturally responsive books like these books for my classroom library.
My students are very determined readers.
Books like these containing translations and/or many visuals richly support their learning and enable them to make connections with their own and each other's backgrounds as they build on their English vocabulary. Other than Asian and Hispanic/Latino books, I also wish for availability/donations of Arabic and Russian/Ukrainian books in the future. Thank you for this opportunity to be able to share about my project in this space. Hoping for your support.
