My Students

Our classroom has students from all over the world! Burma, Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Burundi, Somalia, Kenya, and Mexico are some of the countries represented in our room. My students need help building their literacy skills, vocabulary, and confidence using the English language.

Nearly 750 of our 1,000 students are English Language Learners.

We have students from over 60 different countries. The majority of our students arrive in the United States as refugees; fleeing from famine, war-torn countries or persecution. Their families came looking for better lives. Our students are loving, caring, energetic, motivated, dedicated, and extremely eager to learn. They arrive to school every day with a positive attitude and determination. However, they're entering a classroom that doesn't have the necessary materials to ensure the best possible education. Our school does not have the resources or funds necessary to purchase the materials our classroom needs. Our students deserve to come to a classroom that is equipped to service their varying learning abilities.

My Project

Our classroom library is gradually growing. However it would greatly benefit from a variety of genres on varying ability levels. Nonfiction books provide facts and information that our students enjoy learning about. Having books accessible to the students that they are able to read independently would help increase their literacy skills and confidence. The books on CD will play an integral role in our literacy centers. The students work independently at the listening center and work on building their reading comprehension skills. For English Language Learners, this type of activity is extremely beneficial. It allows the students to focus on understanding the story elements and word meanings rather than focusing on pronouncing words correctly. Most importantly, the books on CD help our ELL's build their confidence in reading which will hopefully lead to a lifelong interest.

This project is extremely important because reading is fundamental.

It's a lifelong tool. The books included in this project are exciting, interesting, and captivating. They will attract readers of all abilities in our classroom. Building a strong reading foundation will allow our English Language Learners to become more confident in their reading abilities. Our students came to this country in search of something better, helping them become stronger readers is one step in the right direction.
