English Language Learners Question History

My students need a classroom Jeopardy system and cartridges to store games.

Imagine trying to master the complexities of US History while you are struggling to master English. This is the task of English language learners in my US History class.

These newcomers to the United States are eager and motivated to be successful and become productive citizens. They want to learn English and go to college. History is their most challenging subject; it is dense with content and is heavy with language. Students ability to analyze historical cause and effect, and express themselves on academic topics is critical to their future success in college. My task is to make my history class come alive! Playing jeopardy in class allows my students to practice English (can you put that in the form of a question please!) and review history content at the same time. We play no-tech jeopardy in class now, but having an electronic system complete with clickers and scoreboard will bring the game and the excitement about learning history up to the next level.

Classroom jeopardy is both a learning tool and a motivation tool. Whether students are struggling to write an essay on the Progressive Era or arguing the actions of President Truman, the game at the end of the tunnel will become the carrot at the end of the stick!

My students are preparing for college and citizenship in the United States. Classroom jeopardy, when used as a motivational tool and a learning tool will help them realize their potential.
