This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students could spend the whole day on the computer-- waiting for it to boot up, only to then have it freeze. With the 10 year old computer currently in my classroom, it is nearly impossible for them to use it without there being frustrating technical problems that interrupt a lesson or activity.

My students are 1st and 2nd grade English language learners, many of whom have arrived to the United States within the last year from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, or Mexico.

They attend a high poverty, urban public school in a neighborhood battling with drugs and violence. Additionally, my students face a big challenge in school given that they are expected to perform at the level of their English-speaking peers, even though they are learning a new language in addition to content material. Despite the challenges of a language barrier and tough living conditions, my students like all children, love to learn and they love using technology. Often, the only exposure that they get to a computer is in school and therefore every opportunity they have is exciting and immediately engages them in learning.

My Project

Using a computer as a tool for learning will motivate my students to practice and apply their English literacy and language skills because it is fun and engaging. At the same time, they will be developing real world computer literacy skills from an early age. With this computer, I can incorporate more technology into lessons and design literacy-based multimedia projects where they will have hands-on experiences with technology. They will learn to publish their stories and reports on Microsoft Word, surf the Internet, perform online research, and even create multimedia presentations with PowerPoint. Additionally, they can participate in online language activities, such as having video conversations in English with students from other schools. Through these activities and projects, my students will be enriched with new, exciting opportunities that will contribute to their learning of a new language and culture.

Each donation will allow my students to have a unique language learning experience that will benefit them presently by increasing their English, and also in the future by providing them lifelong literacy and technology skills.

These invaluable skills will open endless doors of opportunities that can positively shape the future of my students by leading them to successful life and career choices. Please help make all of this possible for them by making a donation to this project.
