My Students

I am an English teacher in a small rural school in southern Iowa. My students are 90% white farm kids. We do have some racial ethnicity with Spanish-speaking students and foreign exchange students.

I teach 7th -12th graders and we want to expose them to current literature in our ever changing times.

We have the students reading in units and we are focusing on making sure that cross-curricular the students are reaching the standards. They are all getting the English standards through our classes, 7-12, and we would like to have the students keep a journal for tracking standards, objectives, comprehension, vocabulary, essential questions, conventions, and reading strategies.

My Project

Currently due to COVID we have not had journals for our students. We (the English department) would like to provide journals for our students to keep track of standards, conventions, vocabulary, and classroom/book discussions. We are hoping to provide a journal to the students 7-10th grade. Currently, the students do not have a journal that they may keep within the classroom and reference. We hope to make these journals as interactive as possible for each of the units that we are studying. We feel this will benefit our students if we are all having them do their journals/ keep their journals the same throughout the different grades. The only difference is the content per class/grade level.
