My Students

The students in our school are used to not having a lot. It's a poor town that seems to be shrinking every day. The school's budget and the English Department's resources seem to be doing the same. We have very few class sets of novels and what we do have are old and tattered.

Our school is in a small, poor, rural North Carolina town and our students seem to know it.

We are not too far from the big city but the distance is felt. The students are good kids though but because of the lack of funds within the state and county, it's hard to give them all the experiences they deserve. It's hard to get them to think about life outside of this small town because it's all they know and it's all they get to experience. As a result it is a very conservative place with little cultural integration and it shows in the thoughts and actions of the students. Overall though, there are a lot of people that want to help the students and there are a lot of students that want to learn and want to know what life is like outside of small town North Carolina.

My Project

Literature can be a window to a new world and that's what I try to bring to my students each day. I try to expose them to many different types of literature in order to help them understand the culture in which they live but at the same time begin to understand that there are other cultures and ways of living. That is one of the goals of the World Literature course here. To do so however we need the resources. We are heavily lacking in the Hispanic Literature area and it is an important area for our community. As most of the community is either white or black, there is a growing number of students from our Hispanic community. This book will help to reach out to some of the other students that are often underrepresented.

As stated before, this novel will help reach out to the Hispanic community of students and at the same time give other student populations some exposure to other cultures.

At the same time it is an interesting and easily accessible novel that the students will find easy to read, understand and relate to.
