Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"I just don't like to read! Get it?" It's daily reading time in my class. Even when my students don't verbalize the statement above, their apathy is evident. I have come to realize that there is a trend to students who refuse to read. Most of them are English Language Learners and struggle to speak, much less read, in English. I teach at a military themed high school. Out of my 120 students, 110 are boys. My independent reading library is all too small, and all too biased. There is no school library. My bilingual students have very few books they can relate to. Meanwhile, precious instructional and learning time passes. They only have months before the English Regents and SATs. They are years behind their suburban peers in reading levels and have to prepare to read college books and become lifelong readers. Please don't let them fall through the cracks!! You can help. All my students need is literature that appeals to THEM. We need books about boys just like them, books that reach out to boys, and books that will help my students navigate their all-too-demanding adolescent years. Please provide us with 36 copies of books about bilingual teens by student selected authors including Gary Soto. This donation is not just about books. These books offer a chance for students to connect with a world outside their own, and more importantly - the chance that they realize teenage boys all over feel just as they do. My "Free-Write Fridays" reveals every week another student who just wants to know he is normal. Just like all of us, they just want to be heard. Please, please, please give my students a chance at educational and lifelong success. Don't give up on this chance to open up the world of literature and a new world of opportunities!
