"Children must be taught how to think, not what to think." - Margaret Mead.
My students come from extremely diverse cultural backgrounds.
Some of them have very recently moved to the United States and speak limited (or no) English, while others come from single-parent families. All of my students are excited to learn and would love having the tools to do so.
Almost 75% of the students at our school receive free or reduced price lunch, so not all students' families have the funds to purchase items for the classroom. We don't even have a PTO to help support our classrooms. We provide as much as we can, but a little help would be amazing!
My students LOVE to learn, and are always excited when they can create and build to apply their learning!
My Project
We have requested Lego bricks, baseplates, Keva planks and cardboard scissors to help us create and build! Students will use the engineering design process to define a problem that needs to be solved, plan solutions, build models, test their models and reflect. Students will then redesign as needed.
Students need opportunities to solve authentic problems, and they need the materials necessary to do so.
These materials will help these 4th graders think through problems and reflect on the process.
In our makerspace area, students will solve the problems they come up with. You should see my students when they get the opportunity to create. Their curiosity and creativity holds no bounds!
