My Project

Engineering Performance is a project designed to bring STEM learning directly into the world of physical education. Students will not only participate in athletic movements like sprints, vertical jumps, and technical sports skills, but also learn how to measure, analyze, and interpret the data behind their performance. By combining technology with exercise, students will explore the science of human movement while applying principles of engineering, physics, and physiology to better understand how their bodies work.

This project puts students in the role of both athlete and scientist.

With tools like the Osmo Pocket 3 handheld camera, students will capture precise footage of their movement mechanics to analyze body positioning and technique. The Speed Tech laser timer will provide accurate sprint times and velocity data, while the vertical jump tester will measure lower-body power. Together, these devices will give students access to real-world performance data that they can break down mathematically and scientifically, building skills in biomechanics, kinesiology, and data science.

By engaging in this process, students will see how STEM applies far beyond the classroom and into areas they are passionate about, like sports, health, and fitness. They will develop critical thinking skills as they identify movement errors, test ways to improve performance, and compare results across trials. The data collected will allow for deeper conversations around physics (forces and velocity), biology (muscle function and energy systems), and engineering (designing efficient movements). With this project, students won’t just play sports, they will engineer performance.
