Engineering Kindness: SEL Through Button-Making in FCS!

Help me give my students a button-making machine, refill kits, and creative supplies so they can design and share positive messages that support social and emotional learning through hands-on, STEAM-based projects.

My Project

Project Overview:

In our rural Pennsylvania high school, more than half of our students live below the poverty line.

Many face social and emotional challenges that make learning even more difficult. In my Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) classes, we focus on building the whole student—emotionally, socially, and academically. With your help, I’d love to bring in a button-making machine and supplies so my students can engineer their own kindness campaigns and design buttons that promote empathy, inclusion, and positive self-expression.

What We Need:

Button-making machine

Refill button parts and printable button materials

Basic art supplies (markers, cardstock, colored pencils)

Why This Matters:

This project promotes Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) by giving students a tangible, creative outlet to express themselves and connect with others. Button-making becomes a powerful tool for sharing messages about kindness, identity, and mental health awareness throughout the school. It also introduces students to Engineering Design and STEAM principles as they plan, prototype, and produce their button designs.

Curriculum Connections:

PA Family and Consumer Science Standards:

11.1.12F: Evaluate the impact of lifelong learning on personal success

11.4.12A: Analyze the roles of family members in transmitting societal norms and culture

11.4.12C: Evaluate effective conflict resolution and collaboration strategies

Career Education and Work Standards:

13.1.11A: Relate careers to individual interests, abilities, and aptitudes

13.2.11E: Demonstrate, in the school setting, skills necessary for job success (e.g., communication, teamwork, problem-solving)

Our Vision:

Students will work together to design positive message buttons (e.g., “You Belong Here,” “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully”) that are distributed in school or used during awareness weeks. The project blends creativity, engineering thinking, and real-world application—all while building emotional intelligence.
