“You do have to try, learn, and improve. You do have to put yourself out there and risk failure. But in this new world, you don’t have to go bankrupt if you fail because you can fail small. You can innovate as a hobby. Imagine that: a nation of innovation hobbyists working to make their lives more meaningful and the world a better place. Welcome to the maker revolution.” ― Mark Hatch, The Maker Movement
Libraries are changing; they are no longer just books, they are a playground for learning new things.
Each of our students brings his or her own unique ideas and understandings to the classroom when it comes to exploring new things. Our community includes Somali, Ethiopian, Mexican, Vietnamese, Thai, African-American and Caucasian students. Students of all socioeconomic and racial backgrounds come together to challenge and learn from one another. They need the chance to innovate, tinker, build, and explore. They need the freedom to dream of something, fail, and try again. They need the space to succeed in doing something nobody else has done. Let’s let the library be that space for them. Let’s build a MakerSpace!
My Project
STEM activities, like an engineering LEGO wall, provide opportunities for students to develop 21st-Century skills through hands-on, inquiry-based experimentation and discovery. Having a LEGO wall in the Library Media Center will give students the opportunity to connect engineering with literacy. For example, students can design characters from a story, or illustrate elements of the story, using the LEGO bricks.
Hands-on activities, such as LEGOs, allow freedom of expression and encourage all children to think in new ways.
These hands-on activities provide differentiation and allow ALL students to interact with literature in a more memorable and meaningful way. Our LEGO wall will be an important part of the Makerspace in our library. LEGOS are familiar to most students, but by using them in a school setting, they will be challenged to use these tools in a new way as they design and build creations, solving problems along the way.
