“You do have to try, learn, and improve. You do have to put yourself out there and risk failure. But in this new world, you don’t have to go bankrupt if you fail because you can fail small. You can innovate as a hobby. Imagine that: a nation of innovation hobbyists working to make their lives more meaningful and the world a better place. Welcome to the maker revolution.” ― Mark Hatch, The Maker Movement
Libraries are changing; they are no longer just books, they are a playground for learning new things.
Each of our students brings his or her own unique ideas and understandings to the classroom when it comes to exploring new things. Our community includes Somali, Ethiopian, Mexican, Vietnamese, Thai, African-American and Caucasian students. Students of all socioeconomic and racial backgrounds come together to challenge and learn from one another. They need the chance to innovate, tinker, build, and explore. They need the freedom to dream of something, fail, and try again. They need the space to succeed in doing something nobody else has done. Let’s let the library be that space for them. Let’s build a MakerSpace!
My Project
Students who play with blocks tend to excel in the subjects of mathematics and science. Allowing my students to physically handle KEVA planks can build a fundamental understanding of quantities, balance, stability, geometry, etc.
Research has proven that the use of hands-on manipulatives, such as Keva Planks, can increase students' attentiveness and engagement.
Keva planks will be an important part of the MakerSpace in our library. Though simple in design, these planks can be used in an infinite number of ways. We will use them for engineering challenges, often in small groups encouraging collaboration and communication. Building, exploring, and communicating with others is an essential skill to becoming a successful 21st century learner.
