My Students

“The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts.” C.S. Lewis On a typical day, it is my mission to irrigate deserts by allowing my students to turn into scientist. I want them to self-discover, observe, explore, experiment and have fun. Science comes alive.

I have the privilege to teach 5th graders at a great school.

My students amaze me everyday with their creative and outside the box thinking. They really enjoy discovering things for themselves and learning how to develop solutions for problems. I found that the best way for my kids to learn was to have them get their hands dirty and really make my classroom a hands-on learning environment. They know that when they come into the classroom they become scientists and it's time to work. I really enjoy when I get the opportunity to bring engineering to the science lessons. I would describe my school as a place that focuses on differentiated instruction, technology and growing learners. They really make it a goal every year to be the best that they can be and never stop learning.

My Project

With the K'NEX sets it will allow my students to grow in areas of critical science, technology, and engineering concepts in the classroom. The students will have to learn to how to work in teams when building the different models or structures. Working as a team can really be a struggle for 5th graders. They lack the skills and knowledge to know how to utilize everyone's strengths and abilities as a team. These materials would be a great component for my classroom because it goes well with the identity of my classroom. My classroom is built on self-learning, experimenting and connecting science TEKS to real world application. I truly believe these materials will give my students the opportunity grow as hands-on, critical thinkers. They will not only learn 5th grade science, but will also learn concepts like engineering, critical thinking and teamwork.

Every year, I make it a goal of mine to grow as a science teacher.

I ask myself, what can I do differently to make science come more alive for my students? I feel if I can make them feel like scientists, that they will act like scientists. The K’NEX sets will give my students the opportunity to learn 5th grade science TEKS in a different way. Over the past 5 years of teaching, I have learned that students learn best when they experiment hands-on and connect it with real-world application.
