This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the best job in the world! I have the privilege of working with 20 Pre-Kindergarten students who come to school every day with a sense of curiosity and wonder about the world they live in. For many, this is their first time attending school and it is very rewarding for me to watch them develop.

Preschool age children learn best through play and hands on activities which allow them to develop higher order thinking skills.

It is fascinating to watch students exhibit analytical and problem solving skills when they are given tools and materials that pique their interest. As a result, I like to provide my students with materials that appeal to their natural curiosity and inquisitiveness and help prepare them to solve any and all problems that come their way .

My Project

My Pre-K students’ favorite part of the day is when they visit our learning centers and, without a doubt, their favorite center is the Math and Science Center. In this center, the children work with many different types of manipulatives and materials. These resources develop their higher order thinking skills through analysis and problem solving.

The students especially love working with my limited quantity of Magna-Tiles which are clear and colorful magnetic building tiles that allow children to create designs on flat surfaces and/or to build three dimensional structures that require imagination, spatial reasoning and critical thinking skills.

They also develop patterning, shape recognition, classification and fine motor skills, and work well as either a guided activity or as an open ended activity.

The children absolutely love Magna-Tiles and have been able to create and engineer a three dimensional architectural building or machine, but I would love for them to be able to engineer an entire Magna-Tile city. Consequently, I would love to add additional Magna-Tiles to my Math and Science Center and allow my future engineers and architects to let their imaginations soar.
