My Students

We are a 1st grade classroom of 22 students in Alaska. My students attend a diverse neighborhood school of about 260 students. We have no buses; everyone (myself included) lives within walking distance. This helps build a strong sense of community. It is a Title I school, with many students coming from low-income families. Every student can receive free breakfast and lunch.

I want my students to have the same opportunities and learning experiences as other children in an engaging, hands-on environment.

My 1st graders are thinkers. We shift our focus throughout our day, but they have many roles. I tell them from day 1 you are an artist, an author, an illustrator, a mathematician, a scientist, a friend. They come to school every day seeking a connection and wanting to learn. My students are special because they have a strong desire to do their best every day, even if they come from challenging circumstances.

My Project

This year I looped up with my class to teach them in first grade. In kindergarten, we benefitted from the daily use of STEM kits generously donated in previous DonorsChoose.org projects. But our new classroom is a much smaller space, making it difficult to organize and store our beautiful STEM materials in a way that is accessible to students.

Allowing students to learn through exploration and centers promotes self-directed learning.

I am asking for the Mobile STEM Station to allow students the opportunity to explore areas of interest, develop problem-solving skills, and engage in cooperative learning. We will also have the opportunity to take learning on-the-go! Perhaps a project or experiment would be better suited in a larger space, like the Multi-Purpose Room. With the locking casters, I will be able to securely and easily transport STEM materials around the classroom or school. The rolling cart has a giant 1” grid and rulers on top for building and measuring. It also has as a magnetic write & wipe board on each side where students can plan their designs, experiment with our magnet kits, and much more! Ample storage space is provided with cubbies and shelves on the bottom of the unit so that a wide selection of materials are available to students.

The cart will give students multiple opportunities throughout the day to use STEM materials and learn to work as a team. All of these supplies will be used used during math, science, and play time. We are very excited for the endless possibilities for learning the Mobile STEM Station will provide!
