Engineering Energy

Help me give my students the materials to unlock energy transformations. Beginning with potential to kinetic and extending our learning to solar, thermal and wind power.

My Students

My students live in an urban environment surrounded by wild animals and wild weather! Moose, geese, and even black bears have been known to roam our neighborhood and playground while we shop for groceries just a quarter mile away. The weather can change in the course of minutes, from rain to snow to hail, and then rise twenty degrees with a little dab of sunshine. Our school has over 400 students, including grades K-6. My students are eager to learn and are keen observers of the world. Many emotions in our classroom revolve around ever-changing home lives, job loss/gain, hormones, middle school fears, and our crazy seasonal changes.

When life is in a state of flux, my students escape into books, friends, technology, outdoors and art.

Within my classroom, creating a friendly, steady environment with clear expectations is always a priority. Working through life's troubles is a constant; having a safe space to allow students to try-out different problem-solving skills is important to me. My students have resiliency, good-hearts, a positive attitude, and a strong work-ethic.

My Project

Starting with the energy of pendulums, students will quickly grasp the concept of potential and kinetic energy. We will then move to understanding different forms of energy including gravitational, elastic/mechanical, thermal, chemical, radiant/light, and sound. The energy sticks will demonstrate how energy moves in a circuit, turning our human bodies into conductors of electricity. Then students will work in small teams, and centers to work through different snap circuit challenges, thus furthering their knowledge of circuits.

Using their knowledge of circuits, students will build cars first powered just by ramps, then rubber bands, then batteries, finally adding gears and fans to propel.

Exchanging the batteries for solar panels students will compare benefits of each type of energy source.

The paper cups will initially be used to hold supplies but then act as windmill bases, and windmill basket lifts. With the skewers students will work to create their own windmill blades and test pitch to increase lift. Magnetic fillings, Wooly Willy, and solar beads will demonstrate the invisible forces of energy. Glow sticks will show chemical energy and the impacts of thermal energy on solutions. Using hands-on materials students will be able to physically create transformations of energy and possibly become the next global engineers.
