Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach Robotics, Math and SECME (Science, Engineering, Communication, and Math Enrichment) at a school in a high poverty area in one of the largest cities in Texas. My students often do not make it outside of the ward in which they are located once they graduate...so many do not realize the possibilities out there for them. We have a very high special education population and our school is roughly 85% African American and 15% Hispanic. My focus with my kids it to try to introduce them to the possibilities that they have in Engineering and all of the different places it can take them outside of the ward.
In order for me to introduce my kids to Engineering, I need to get the kids involved in hands-on work to show them that this is possible for them to accomplish.
I am seeking to obtain 2 Roller Coaster Physics construction kits to supplement the kits that I have so that I can reach all of my classes. I will use these to help the kids see that they can be a part of Engineering in our future.
Your help will help me Engineer Better Minds with my students and help me to help them find their way out of the high poverty area that they are in.
