My group of third graders is a loving, empathetic, hard-working bunch! They are a diverse group with many talents and gifts. They are also extremely diverse learners.
These third graders are developing their joy of reading, and I've noticed early on in the year that they LOVE read aloud.
They are interested in other people's stories, both fiction and nonfiction. I love to watch their faces as they listen to the books and enjoy the fantastic illustrations of the news stories we read each day.
My Project
We kick off each year in my third-grade class learning about the beauty and diversity of all our families. My students learn that no family is exactly alike, but we can find commonalities with anyone. It's important for my students to feel valued, welcomed, and recognized, which is why I try to have a rich library full of diverse family books.
With these engaging new books, my students will be able to see themselves represented, as well as many other diverse, unique families.
Learning and exploring about others helps build relationships and empathy among peers and teachers alike.
I continue throughout the year exploring empathy, creativity, individuality, and growth mindset. These books will help my students explore the idea that they are capable, amazing, diverse learners that each bring unique perspectives and gifts to our classroom.
