Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is located in an urban area of Northern, California.
95% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
The majority of my students are English language learners. Our school is committed to providing all students access to the curriculum especially as we move towards full implementation of the Common Core Standards.
My students are second language learners. They are third graders who are at an intermediate level of English Language Development. They attend school in the Mission neighborhood and many come from immigrant families, who want them to learn and make the most of their education.
My Project
My classroom needs serious updating! Overhead projectors were introduced to schools in the 1960s and frankly, they are clunky, inefficient, and uninspiring. Relying on transparencies makes it difficult to regularly incorporate images and visuals into classroom instruction.
We need an LED projector to help my students in a variety of ways.
First, the projector will vastly increase the number of images and visuals I can use in my classroom to support English-language development AND my students who are visual learners. It will also help provide increased access for students with auditory processing disabilities. Next, the projector will enable me to create interactive and dynamic presentations for my students, increasing overall engagement in direct instruction. With this projector, my students will learn to use computers and software by having a model at the front of the room. I will be able to show short educational video clips to demonstrate academic concepts and make PowerPoint presentations a regular part of my lessons.
How can we expect students to be successful in the digital age if they are learning in a classroom outfitted with technology from the 1960s?
Help me prepare my students for the 21st century and also help close the digital divide that widens with every new technology that my students lack. Engaging lessons and visuals will help my students move to the next level of English acquisition. Presently, I rely on texts and oral language during instruction. I lack the visual supports that can help students understand concepts and make lessons more engaging.
