This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Over the past several years, the schools in our district have suffered from severe budget cuts, limiting the amount of resources our students have to learn. Each year, my colleagues and I work diligently to find new, creative ways for our students to grow. One thing I want to focus on this year is finding hands on, interactive ways for my students to learn science skills.

The students at our school are low-income inner city students who all receive a free lunch.

They are a mix of neighborhood kids and students who travel in by bus from other parts of the city. Our students have the unique opportunity to come together from different areas to learn from each other. To make their learning most meaningful, it is important to provide them with as many hands on learning experiences as possible. Building a science curriculum that is rich in hands on STEM activities will help to spark interest in science, as well as challenge each learner in my classroom.

My Project

Students learn best when they are able to work together to complete hands-on activities. Rather than using a text book or watching videos, the materials in this project will help me facilitate an entire year's worth of interactive STEM lessons where students work with their peers through hands-on learning. They will be able to see the skills we are learning in science class come to life while exploring with magnets, building and testing bridges, "racing" dinosaurs and much more. These STEM materials will help foster a love and appreciation for science in all of my students that will go beyond the classroom.
