My Students

"We use mathematics as a tool to make sense of and understand the world around us." -Paul Reimer

My students each come from economically depressed homes.

Of my 28 students, 22 speak a language other than English at home. Over 90% of my class qualifies for free or reduced price meals at school. Having even basic school supplies is often a luxury for these students. More often than not, I provide them with pencils, notebooks, paper, scissors, and folders. All of my students struggle financially and many struggle academically, but all of them can be successful in school.

My Project

Intermediate grade (5th and 6th) mathematics is challenging for all students. For the first time, they are asked to apply previously mastered concepts in new and unique ways. If students haven't mastered previously taught concepts, such as multiplication and division, then working with fractions, decimals, algebraic equations, and surface area of three-dimensional shapes is nearly impossible. The educational apps that can be used on the iPad are endless. My students will use the iPads to build their mathematical skills. The iPads will also be used in science for researching environmental topics, and in Language Arts to assist with reading and writing practice. With an iPad, the students can stay engaged with the many math and science games and tools provided.

Donations to this project will help students have access to the newest technology skills while allowing them to increase their mastery of higher level mathematical concepts.

They will also allow students greater independence and ownership of their learning as so many apps and iPad resources are geared towards intermediate students.
