My Students

Our students are inquisitive, hardworking, compassionate, and eager to learn. Our school is located in a beach community with a culturally diverse population. That being said, our 7th-grade team is committed to providing culturally responsive novels with stories that will inspire students to read and, more importantly, help students gain a deeper understanding of cultural differences within a community. It is our hope our students, as voracious readers, will become more socially aware, empathetic, and commit to social responsibility. Our team would like to expand novel our and text choices to include the voices and stories of people across all backgrounds and genres.

My Project

We would like to include these novels as part of our 7th grade Book Clubs which focus on diverse authors, characters, and relevant topics designed to engage our students. Students will have the opportunity to select novels for Book Clubs that emphasize different perspectives and experiences. These novels are culturally relevant and will ensure awareness, and thought-provoking classroom discourse. We would like to not only provide students with choice but also allow students to discover a variety of character experiences thus creating global awareness and empathy for others. Our seventh-grade team is committed to providing a classroom environment that supports critical thinking for all students through the use of rich and engaging literature.
