Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a classroom filled with brilliant, energetic students who are primarily kinesthetic and visual learners. These students need to touch, feel and see their lessons. Having just moved up from third grade to fourth, I need to procure these materials to ensure the success of my students.

My students are primarily second language learners and African American students whose families are struggling to make ends meet.

They come to school every day with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. They live in a high poverty area and often don't have breakfast before coming to school. Needless to say, I serve a lot of food along with the academics in my classroom. My students are inquisitive and energetic. It is essential that I provide interactive and hands-on dynamic learning materials to ensure their success. Our school is only a year old but due to budget cuts, we don't have funding for any STEM materials. In fact, at the end of last year, a fire destroyed some of our fourth grade materials, and I am trying to restock and resupply some of the necessary materials for my 4th grade curriculum. Additionally, I am working to ensure that my students have greater access to the digital world that we live in.

My Project

This year, I get to teach about earth science, specifically rocks and minerals. Unfortunately, I don't have any of the hands on materials needed to engage my students. I am requesting a large number of sets of rocks and engaging games for my students. Additionally, I am hoping to go deeper with chemistry and physical science and hoping to get curriculum materials to bring these areas alive for my students. In fourth grade, reading and writing must be integrated into all parts of the curricula. Most of my students are struggling readers. Thus, I am requesting a learning center and some engaging DVDs to fill the gap and inspire my students to be successful. The PC that I am requesting will be used in my classroom to project engaging PowerPoint and interactive online lessons.

Donations to my project will make my students successful in the 4th grade.

I am looping with many of my students this year. I am acutely aware of their learning style and their struggles to achieve proficiency. I work in a school district and a school that has literally no funding for engaging supplemental hands-on materials. I have the bare bones to provide STEM teaching. I have a document camera and LCD projector in my classroom. However, I still need the raw materials of science and literacy.
