Engaging Students With Graphic Novels And Time Warp Trio

My students need additional graphic novels in order to be able to read in pairs or small groups, and they also need books that present social studies content with humor.

My Students

Have you ever sat in a class and felt like the readings didn't make sense, and the content had nothing to do with you? My students need engaging materials that make it fun to read and present challenging concepts in a humorous way.

My students are 6th grade middle school students.

Some have specific learning disabilities that hinder their ability to read; others are English language learners. They live in a community that is predominantly Mexican/Mexican American. Our school is trying to encourage independent reading outside of the classroom. The school's computerized reading program identifies each student's reading level range and encourages students to read within that level in order to increase fluency and comprehension. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of high interest books for middle school students who are reading at the 2nd or 3rd grade level. Some of my students are reluctant to read because it is a difficult task for them. They don't think it is fun. And, reading is a source of embarrassment for some. They know that they are struggling. They deserve the opportunity to improve their reading and maintain their dignity.

My Project

Last month, I received 22 graphic novels that were part of the Library of Doom series by Michael Dahl. Since then, I have been inundated with requests to check out these books. Also, several of my students (who have been reluctant to participate in our school wide Accelerated Reader Program) have been reading them and are finally taking computerized comprehension tests on these books. Their increased participation will impact their ability to independently read, and their grade in English/Language Arts. Some of the graphic novels that I have requested are duplicates and will allow students to read the same book in pairs and small groups of four. The books from the Time Warp Trio series are longer than the graphic novels, yet they are relatively short and present 6th grade and 7th grade level history content in a humorous way. I believe these books will help my students start to read longer chapter books. They will also help my students access the content in social studies.

Your support will provide my students with engaging materials.

These graphic novels and Time Warp Trio books will help my students continue to embrace independent reading. And, the Time Warp Trio books, specifically, will help students gain background knowledge regarding 6th and 7th grade level history content standards. Finally, these materials may help my students transition from short books to longer chapter books. Ultimately, my students may learn to enjoy reading and historical topics!
