My students need a variety of chess sets, as well as chess books and problems to challenge them and improve their abilities.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Weaver's classroom raised $205

My Students
Learning happens in many ways within our school community, but the greatest learning is student directed, driven by their passions and interests. Many of my students join me at lunch or recess throughout the week to learn about chess, play and discuss strategy.
I teach a diverse, fifth grade classroom, in a large, urban school district.
Our school focuses on student-interest and inquiry. We want to inspire in our students the desire to seek out opportunities to grow their minds and follow the path of a lifelong learner.
My Project
Currently, we only have one board to play on, and it is a hodgepodge of pieces that have drifted together. My students will use these boards to take an active part in our chess recess, and the books will allow them to practice problem-solving skills throughout the day. The variety of boards will also allow my students to invite other children to join, or to take chess out to recess on days I am not able to host students in my room.
Any way that students can be engaged in problem-solving will strengthen their thinking skills and better equip them for learning in other areas.
Chess is a strategic, critical-thinking game that many of my students are seeking out. Monopolizing on this interest will strengthen our classroom community, improve students' ability to focus and plan ahead, and prepare them to adapt to new situations.
