My Students

This year I have a class of 28 students, but still work with groups of other students during our Enrichment and Intervention time. They come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences but share the same goals and basic needs. My classroom just this year, has students that come from English, Spanish, and Vietnamese speaking homes. However, we represent a wide variety of socioeconomic, cultural, and educated backgrounds.

Every student that has walked into my classroom has their own unique gifts and challenges.

They are each amazing young people with the potential to do great things! Some have special learning needs, some are learning the English language, and some have families that are working hard to meet basic needs. I want to make sure that each child gets what they require in my classroom so that I can support them to be the most successful they can be.

My Project

Students this year are finding it more and more difficult to engage in traditional classroom lessons. They are overcoming gaps and learning how to navigate their role as a student in a school classroom. Electronics and media that engage them have made it more difficult to keep their interest in a brick and mortar school during learning.

One way to help students become more engaged in math lessons is to use games!

Students can utilize their learning about fractions, data, base ten numbers, and functions as they play against each other in math games. They enjoy the competition as they put their skills to use and learn from each other. The other added benefit is social interaction practice as they learn to take turns, play together, and cheer each other on.
