Engaging Striving Readers with Yoga-Take 2!

Help me give my students ACTIVE reading skills. Students will be taught to use yoga poses while reading independently to help them focus. These yoga mats will give them a safe place to focus while they read.

My Students

"Be the change you wish to see in this world." -Gandhi I know one day the students I work with will change the world for the better. I work in a beautifully diverse school, racially and socio-economically. Our students are smart and talented. Our students range in abilities and often do well with hands on learning. We are a one to one school, so every student has a school issued iPad. As a school, we have been focusing on increasing reading engagement and achievement. Our aim is to support ALL students where they are and to move them forward.

My Project

Many striving readers find independent reading inaccessible because they have trouble focusing. Providing movement for the body while reading allows students to harness the energy that often distracts them from their reading. Students will be taught 4 yoga poses that allow them to stretch and read at the same time. This will calm their bodies, provide energy releasing movement, and help them focus on what they are reading. The yoga mats will give students a safe place to conduct their yoga reading. Teachers in any class will be able to check out the yoga mats, and I will provide the instructional yoga video through our shared teacher platform.
