My Students

My middle school students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some students have spent their entire school career at my school. Other students have been in multiple schools, still, others have never been in school and come from refugee camps in other countries. Often, we have students in attendance who have just arrived in the country. Currently, there are 16 different languages represented in my building.

Even though they come from different backgrounds they have many things in common, including determination and a desire to be successful.

My Project

My students need copies of 2 books in order to spark their interest in thinking like a scientist as well as sharpening their skills of providing textual evidence for their thinking. The Prometheus Project series is an engaging read filled with likable characters, action, suspense and science concepts. By having class sets of the first two books, we will be able to continue honing our skills with characters we have come to know. A skill that is lacking in our middle school students is the ability to defend their thinking by using evidence from both fiction and non-fiction text. Using these stories for practice will help them better analyze and defend their thinking.
