Engaging Science Books for Girls

My Students

Reading and discussing science nonfiction works will enable my students to develop into critically thinking, young women. My students must be equipped with the skills to analyze and interpret nonfiction works they will encounter in the future, if they are to be successful citizens.

My students are inquisitive, hard-working, and in constant pursuit of new, engaging material to read.

82% of students at our all-girls, Title I, public school in Brooklyn, NY receive free or reduced-price lunch. The school is diverse; approximately a third of my students are African-American, a third are Middle-Eastern, and a third are Hispanic.

My Project

Every single one of my students in my Living Environment Regents (High School Biology) class are repeating this class for the first or second time. A classroom set of the book nonfiction thriller The Hot Zone, a true story about a viral outbreak, will hopefully inspire my students to love biology as much as I do, as well as realize the real-life application of the content we are learning in class.

At its heart, the Living Environment Regents is a reading test.

The dearth of well-written, engaging science nonfiction books targeted to high school students at our school is worrisome for my struggling readers. Not only will exposure to excellent nonfiction texts improve their test scores, it will also enable my students to develop the skills to become well-educated, informed citizens able to digest the news and other nonfiction texts in history, English, and future science classes.
