Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are English Language Learners. They attend our school with the additional challenge of learning a second language. Many of my students not only are learning English but are also behind their current grade level due to missed or interrupted instruction in their native countries. Their stories of their experiences and journeys to my school are not only impressive but also offer me the opportunity to gain perspective of their language and culture. The way I see it, I learn from them as they learn from me, and they have critical needs beyond just learning English.
My materials will provide engaging resources to close learning gaps while increasing their second language proficiency.
Many of my items are sensory friendly, which provide comfort and excitement as well as learning. My requested materials will provide engaging resources for math, language learning, and social studies vocabulary through independent play. I have included Bob Books, which provide early readers with opportunities to develop their reading skills beginning with simple sentences using cvc words. A fill in the blank phonics stamp set allows students to have a fun, tactile activity to increase sound-letter correspondence. I have also found that you can never have too many magnetic letters activities! For vocabulary support, I have included several color word vocabulary resources, such as a magnetic sorting center, a button sorting set (also great for size vocab, and comparing/contrasting), and a magnetic color maze, which is also an excellent way to build fine motor skills. Math manipulatives and items for my community unit that allow for dramatic play are also included.
I have carefully chosen materials that will support both English learning as well as Math in an engaging manner, and that align with Core standards in our state and district. Thank you for considering my project!
